Australian cabaret star Hans was seriously injured after falling 4 meters while performing on a cruise ship off the coast of Turkey overnight.
- Matt Gilbertson, also known as Hans, fell while performing on a European cruise ship
- He suffered serious foot injuries and ‘manageable’ spinal damage
- He will be flown to London for treatment.
Adelaide artist Matt Gilbertson, whose stage character Hans is a German camp accordionist, was on a European tour with Atlantis Events.
The performer posted on his social media pages that he fell 4 meters from the stage into an orchestra pit.
“This resulted in a broken foot and slight spinal damage,” he wrote.
“At this point the spine looks manageable, but I’m going to have to have major surgery on my right foot.
“Obviously it’s not an ideal situation, but it could have been much, much worse.”
The artist will be transported by medical evacuation from Turkey to London for surgery.
His agency Watercooler Talent released a statement saying Hans “reluctantly had to step down” from his main act at the Broken Heel Festival in Broken Hill next month.
“Upcoming shows are currently on hold until we have a better idea of my recovery plan,” Hans wrote on his page.
“I want to thank everyone in the audience on Thursday night for being so understanding when this happened and to those who have already sent very kind messages of support.”
Hans has been a popular face at Adelaide Fringe and gained international fame after appearing on America’s Got Talent in 2018.
