John Cameron Mitchell to give his all in Brisbane for just one night
Actor, playwright, performer, screenwriter and director John Cameron Mitchell is back in Australia.
Writer “Hedwig And The Angry Inch” will present a cabaret show exclusively for Brisbane fans, showcasing his years of experience on stage and on screen in a one-night-only performance where he will also provide a “Drunken director’s commentary” to ‘Hedwig’.
John is also in Australia to film an upcoming adaptation of “Tiger King”.
Before taking the stage, John has a quick chat with us about what to expect in the show.
What exactly will you present on this unique show?
I happen to be in Brisbane to play Joe Exotic in an adaptation of the ‘Tiger King’ series. I’ll be at Tivoli doing Barry Manilow, a few “Hedwig” songs and a few new songs, including a Joe Exotic song I co-wrote with Australian composer Brett Every.
What are you looking forward to bringing this to Brisbane?
I had absolute pleasure at QPAC. Probably the best audience I’ve had in Australia. So I expect everything as well. I will also be inviting my cast and crew from “Tiger King” so we can have an impromptu launch party!
Why do you think cabaret is such an effective performance style?
Cabaret is perhaps my favorite form of entertainment. The room tends to be intimate, there is just enough alcoholic lubrication, the vibe is personal and spontaneous. It just rocks! Artists like Amber Martin, Justin Vivian Bond, Bridget Everett, Alan Cumming, Cole Escola and Lady Rizo all came out of the same NYC fountain. Meow Meow from Melbourne is our honorary New Yorker.
Describe the show using the lyrics of any song you like.
“Overnight … overnight (July 6 to be exact) you will be released.”
John, you’re gonna shoot a limited series while you’re in Australia. Tell us a bit about that.
The dramatization of “Tiger King” will delve into the more personal lives of Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin (Kate McKinnon) instead of the rubbery sensationalism of the docuseries. I’m excited to play a queer antihero who ended up not only emulating his redneck oppressors, but surpassing them at their own game.
John Cameron Mitchell is playing at Tivoli (Brisbane) on July 6th.
