Megan Hilty brings Broadway to Atlanta

Following the sold-out success of its inaugural Broadway in the Woods presentation with Jeremy Jordan, Art Farm at Serenbe will soon present Megan Hilty in an intimate cabaret accompanied by her musical director Matt Cusson. The beloved star of stage and screen will bring her powerful voice and bubbly personality to a cabaret show that will feature her Broadway setlist. This one-night event will take place at the Pavillon de Serenbe on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available here.

Already a fan favorite for her Broadway portrayal of Glinda in Wicked and Doralee Rhodes in Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5, Hilty became known to theater fans everywhere as triple threat Ivy Lynn in the musical drama “Smash.” NBC.

Megan has performed across the world to sold-out venues, including concerts with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, the National Symphony Orchestra at Kennedy Center, and the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center, among others.

Megan Hilty spoke with BroadwayWorld to discuss the big night!

Megan, what an amazing career you’ve had! What are some of your personal highlights and why?

I loved each project for very different reasons, but the two that completely changed my life were Wicked and Smash. I got into Wicked right after graduating from college and spent four and a half years playing Glinda. I’ve worked with the most amazing people and grown up doing this show. Smash was very different because I was creating a role that no one had ever done before and it was on TV! I have the fondest memories of working with this cast and crew.

How did you come to musical theatre?

As a child, I sang constantly, so my mother made me take lessons with a singing teacher quite early. My teacher’s name was Merry Kimball and she gave me an appreciation for classical music and so my original goal was to go to the opera. But over the years I became very active in a youth theater troupe and my love for musical theater grew steadily – it became pretty clear that this was the path I needed to take and that the musical theater suited me better.

What were your favorite musicals growing up?

I had an extensive collection of musical theater soundtracks and I remember sitting for hours listening to them all and following the booklet that always came with the CDs back then. Some of my favorites were Into The Woods, Ragtime and The Life.

Did you have a great time when you knew you had it?

Nope! I realized pretty quickly that in this business, if you think you’ve “succeeded,” you risk becoming complacent. There is always more to work on!

People are so excited for you to come to Art Farm! Can you tell us about some of the songs you will sing? Will you also tell stories?

There will be a bit of everything. There will be songs from Wicked, 9 to 5, Annie Get Your Gun, Patsy & Loretta… and of course, Smash! And there will be plenty of stories to go along with them.

What do you like about playing in an outdoor environment like The Pavilion at Serenbe?

There’s something so magical about performing outdoors. I’ve never been to the Pavillon de Serenbe before, but the photos are stunning, so I can’t wait to get there!

What was it like being on the hit TV show Smash?

It was literally a dream come true. I have never worked harder in my life, but I loved every second of it. I’m still very proud to know that I was part of a show that put a piece of Broadway in people’s living rooms every week.

Can you tell us about the arrival of Smash on Broadway?

Nope! Ha! Only that it is being developed… finally!

What songs are on your playlist right now?

I enjoy listening to my extremely talented friends. So right now I have Matt Cusson’s incredible album, Only Human, on repeat. My favorite song (so far) is Leaving LA. And Celisse Henderson’s single, Freedom. I’m dying for her to release her next album! He is one of the greatest voices of our generation! I can’t stop listening to Brian Gallagher’s Brownstone either! It’s gritty and dark with some really nice songs sprinkled in – I think Other Side of the Wall is my favorite track!

What are you most looking forward to for your performance at Art Farm in Serenbe on August 27?

I have a new appreciation for performing in front of a live audience after taking it off for over two years. So I’m extremely grateful to sing for this audience in this beautiful setting.
