Qmmunity: A Week of Trans Remembrance and Awareness: Recognizing Those We Have Lost and Those We Love in the Transgender Community – Chronicles

Three months ago, the Qmmunity section planned to release a series of profile pieces about Austin’s trans community to coincide with the Austin Pride Parade, itself slated for an alarming August weekend. Why alarming? Because at the time, Austin’s hospital admissions for the novel coronavirus were on the rise and, well, parades and airborne pandemics don’t match, do they? I clearly remember rereading this week’s Qmmunity column on the day of printing and rechecking a fact on the Austin Pride website to find an article several hours old declaring the parade canceled. The chronicle was rewritten at the last minute – really, like a few hours before going to print – and all of those parts were hidden.
That is until this week – Trans Awareness Week – and we at The Chronicle of Austin The Qmmunity section is going to make you aware of several very cool, very interesting and very exciting trans people in our local scene. What scene? Why, multiple scenes, in fact – art, music, performance, healthcare, etc. Trans people are everywhere, and many in their talents – a community worth celebrating, if I say so trans myself. Take a look at the parts online at austinchronicle.com/qmmunity.
Saturday marks the arrival of another Trans Remembrance Day. This year, so far, at least 45 trans and gender nonconforming people have been killed, making it the deadliest year on record for the trans community. No real mystery as to why: Anti-trans rhetoric permeates much of our legislative air, as well as a vocal part of social media, news media, and just real, ordinary life. How difficult it is to thrive when physical and government attacks surround us, yet the trans community continues to honor ourselves and each other. On Saturday, November 20, take some time to remember those we’ve lost since 1999 when TDoR was founded, with a list of those lost so far in 2021 at hrc.org.
