The Libertarian Party convention caught the attention of many people this weekend, and not just because the the party chose its presidential ticket.

James Weeks, who was running to be party chairman, took the stage in Orlando and performed a striptease.

Yes, a striptease.

“We could use a little fun,” Weeks told the crowd as well as viewers tuned in to C-SPAN, which aired the convention.

Weeks played music on his phone as he removed his badges and encouraged the crowd to cheer. Scattered cheering was the best he got – and that was before it was clear what he was doing.

Things went south pretty quickly when he took off his suspenders and tie. The moment he ripped off his shirt, the crowd erupted into loud boos.

“Sorry, that was a challenge,” Weeks said. “I’m going to go out there and give up.”

What is libertarianism?

The convention mostly made headlines for the selection of former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson to lead the party’s presidential ticket with former Massachusetts Governor William Weld as his running mate, but some observers noted that the stunt de Weeks could have a negative effect on the party.

“They need to do things like get some of their contestants to stop stripping in front of the cameras,” CNN political commentator Errol Louis said on “New Day” on Monday.

Weeks is from Michigan, where “he has dedicated his life to bringing about a free society”, his site says.
